Artist Statement
I am a commuter. Riding the bus has been a part of my everyday
life. I feel like I know the rhythms of
Grand Rapids Central Bus Station by heart.
That is what I wanted to convey in my series of postcards, the different
and varied rhythms that I see everyday.
Using the artistic strategies that we talked about in class and
reviewing the artists’ work that we used as reference for technical and
conceptual ideas, I tried to create in my images small narratives, subtle and
overt.
In the first postcard, I used the
Central Stations Bus platform as my environment. This area is visually interesting because it
combines natural and manmade elements.
The canopy structures particularly illustrate this combination; they are
made of concrete steel bars and wrapped with hanging vines. As I observe these
structures, I see the symbiotic relationships happening within them. These canopies serve as shelter for the
birds, the steel bars help the plants to grow, and the natural vines are a
bright and soothing way to deliver shade to passengers. I tried to limit the colors in this piece, the
green and orange color scheme is meant to convey a warm feeling. The carpet of marigolds makes the scene seem
otherworldly and whimsical. I also
played with repetition and scale, the marigolds in the foreground comically
large. I wanted to achieve a sense of
odd respite, to create and environment that feels real and imagined at the same
time.
In the second postcard, I wanted to
create an eerie sense of space and of time.
I played a lot with the structure and look of the bus. It is meant to look foreboding with its dark
colors and dilapidated exterior. The
rusted awning was achieved using layer masks.
Modification was the primary strategy that I employed in this postcard
design. I added lampposts and a heavy
wooden door to suggest a different time period, and patterns and textures came
into play a lot. I wanted to convey the unglamorous aspects of being a
commuter, the scary reality that when you enter the bus, you are often entering
the unknown.
The third postcard utilizes
isolation and hybridization The wings
and the hot air balloons function as metaphors for “uplifting individuals,” and
for giving individuals who don’t have freedom the freedom to get around by
taking the bus. I wanted to remove the
bus from its usual state on the ground and put it into the clouds to show that
riding the bus is a little bit like being “above the world” in a sense, when
you are surrounded by tinted glass and steel and looking down on everyone on
the street. As a commuter, this is the
rhythm of the bus that I experience most often, the contemplative and
meditative atmosphere of just riding along.
This series of postcards is meant to
be a kind of narrative, highlighting the highs and lows of riding The
Rapid. At times Central Station
functions as a sanctuary for diverse peoples, inviting you to observe closely,
as in the first postcard. At other
times, it can be a dangerous place because of the unknown. However, most of the
time I am uplifted and encouraged when I take the bus because of all the
interesting people and places that I come into to contact with when I sit back
and enjoy the ride.
So inventive and imaginative! The atmosphere you are creating is extremely convincing and beautifully fantastic. The second one is so creepy and beautiful! You really put your personality into this work, and it looks like it took a lot of time. Good job so wonderful :)
ReplyDeleteI especially love all of the attention to detail you paid in the second photograph. There are so many "little" things you included that give it that feeling of creepiness (especially the lightning bolt-nice touch! ;) )
ReplyDeleteYour last image is super whimsical. It reminds me a lot of Sandy Skoglunds work, and the clouds make if feel very "light" and fantastical, but yet kind of disconcerting since there's really nothing holding the bus up. The concept in this image, and the second image, is super interesting and strong.
In your first image, I think it's really beautiful, and you did a good job of blending things together.
Good work!
Your project was really colorful, I loved your different perspectives of the same space. The way you made the bus creepy worked really well. I liked the colors you used and the dead texture of the canopy is very cool. I also liked your presentation because it was a cool personal journey.
ReplyDeleteYour images convey very unique ideas. They first and third image are very whimsical while the second one is a bit darker with a darker meaning but they are all very relatable. You expressed your feelings towards riding the bus that opened up my eyes to the feelings i have when i ride the bus and how true it is that you dont know whats going to happen on the bus or who you'll meet. How you have to put trust into this driver because thats his job. Its also interesting that the first image is calming and laid back before you get on the bus and when it pulls up the second image portrays your doom then when you get off the third image is that "ah ha" its over and i am where i wanted to be.
ReplyDeleteI like the concept of the third postcard. When you explained the meaning behind it - being able to let go because you are not in the driver's seat - it made sense to add the clouds and balloons. I like, in the second postcard, how you added subtle and not-so-subtle details to emphasize that the bus station can be a scary space. I love the word-reversal and the creepy sky. I like, in the first postcard, how you transformed the bus station into an enjoyable and pleasant place. Great use of Photoshop to get your thoughts across!
ReplyDeleteI think your choice of space is very interesting and different from what others have taken on so far. I think you've given yourself a challenge with your choice and that's respectable. I think that the different qualities and emotions that go along with riding the bus are definitely prominent here and obvious and relatable. I think your second one is my favorite, kind of because it reminds me of Harry Potter haha, but I also appreciate your subtle choices in it and all of the elements tie together to make a whole believable image and place.
ReplyDeleteA fun narrative series!
ReplyDeleteI love how you reflect your experience of bus ridding and present it in a relatable way. The first postcard was stitched well together and the vibrant colors portray your overall concept very well. The last postcard is fun and surreal. Great use of symbols and metaphors to create an imaginative environment. It could become even stronger if you included a little more reality, such as parts of the bus station (for postcard 3)
Good job :)
The project really illustrates your feelings about your commute, and how each particular step of the journey makes you feel. It's very successful, and the things that you've added to the photos would communicate the feelings without your explanation, which is even better. Great work!
ReplyDeleteI think you did a good job of conveying the experience of ridding the bus. As someone who doesn't usually ride the bus, after viewing your photos I feel better understand the experience of ridding the bus. One aspect of the photos that stuck out to me was that the text was backwards on the second photo. This I felt added greatly to the fact that this is a place that could be forbidding. Good job
ReplyDeleteI really appreciated how well your postcards illustrated the concepts you were trying to portray, they came across so clear!! My favorite one was the last one, I think the feeling of being higher and kind of carefree is so true and you showed it so well! The 2nd one was so spooky feeling. Great job visually representing your ideas!
